Notary Public

An introduction to the procedure of notarisation of private and company documents in Denmark.

General Information

  • Notarisation and certification of original documents (certified copies) can be done in all court houses in Denmark. Please see a full list of notary offices here: https://www.domstol.dk/selvbetjening/notarbooking/

  • A Notary Public can confirm a signature on a document or make a certified copy of original documents.

  • A notarisation can be private; confirming a persons identity, or company related; confirming a persons invovement and authority to sign on a company’s behalf.

  • Larger companies with a significant need of notarisation services can have signature samples stored at the local Notary to avoid having to come in person in order to have company documents notarised.

Company documents

If you need a document signed on the behalf of a company, it is important to first understand who has the authority to sign documents on the company’s behalf. This information is publicly available on VIRK.dk. Every registered company has their own set of rules as to whom is allowed to sign on the company’s behalf.

The notarisation of company documents can be done in one of two following ways:

  1. The representatives that are authorised to sign documents on the company’s behalf can appear in person at the Notary Public and sign the documents , - or have their signature stored at the local notary and have originals notarised without their presence.

  2. The representatives that are authorised to sign documents on the company’s behalf can issue a power of attorney allowing other company representatives/employees to sign on their behalf. They can either appear in person at the Notary Public and sign the document, - or have their signature stored at the local notary and have originals notarised without their presence.
